What is Dramatherapy?
Dramatherapy is a form of psychotherapy. It’s about encouraging people to show how they feel, rather than needing to find the right words.
The wound we suffer as a result of our experiences is our trauma, in therapy we hope to begin the task of healing those sore wounds.
Dramatherapy and creative arts therapies use conversation with creativity to explore your situation. We might draw or paint while we talk, use objects and materials or our bodies in our work together. In this way therapy can feel like storytelling, but isn't limited to one mode of communication.
Importantly, no artistic or creative skill is required, my focus is on expression and exploration, not creating a finished product or performance.
When I work with children and adolescents we may make something creative, play a game, tell a story or use toys to play with. In this way we build a relationship and begin to explore the world and the ways it works and doesn't work.
When I work with adults, talking is often a starting point but we may also create art, play games, imagine ‘what if’, tell stories and in doing so dig deeper into concerns and difficulties.
In groups we will talk, but I’ll also encourage deep listening and reflection. We may work with an initial prompt such as a picture, a theory or quote, or create discussion via art, story sharing or a game.
